About me

My name is Sara-Jane Asman, I'm an experienced and qualified Art Psychotherapist. I’m so excited to share a little bit about myself and my background and how I came to work in mental health. I am looking forward to embarking on this journey together and I truly believe that getting to know each other fosters a deeper connection, and I hope to create a warm and welcoming environment for all of us.

I will always be open and honest with you: I’ve navigated my own share of trauma and psychological challenges. At one point in my life, I struggled deeply with depression because of unprocessed childhood trauma and through that journey, I found that conventional therapy just wasn’t enough for me to understand my struggles truly. I felt like I was missing something essential. It was during this time that my therapist guided me towards creative expression. I began to use art to explore my emotions and gain deeper insights. It was a process that resonated with me and seemed to go straight to the heart of many issues.

Art became and continues to be a lifeline—a way for me to connect with myself and process my challenges. That experience was life changing and it inspired me to return to university and study a degree in psychology and art therapy. I have a Masters in Art Therapy and hold a psot graduate degree in psychology.

Now, I hold a postgraduate degree in psychology and a master’s in art therapy, and I’m committed to continuous learning to keep my skills up to date and my approach innovative. Having lived and worked for many years in South Africa I have been fortunate to work with many clients from diverse cultural backgrounds which I hope gives me a certain curiosity and openness to all cultures.

As an artist, I love exploring different mediums—whether it’s painting, drawing with coloured pencils, working with fibre, or moulding clay. Each medium offers a unique way for me to express emotions and thoughts that might be difficult to put into words. I’m dedicated to showing you the transformative nature of simple creative therapeutic processes. I truly believe that everyone has the capacity for healing and growth, and sometimes, all it takes is a brush, a pencil, or a hunk of clay to start that journey.
